Novio Boy by Gary Soto - Presented by CSU, San Bernardino Theatre Arts Department
Message from Director Kathy Ervin
This play explores the mystery of love through the eyes of Rudy and his circle of family and friends as they try to explain how to "speak from your heart". The play is a lovely reminder of the sweet, personal thing love is meant to be. Every character has a different idea about how to get the relationship going. Some ideas use common sense and some are farfetched. But all the characters understand the importance of the first impression.
We picked this play because of the opportunity to live in the world of Gary Soto was very exciting. Mr. Soto is a writer whose work speaks clearly to a young audience and reminds an older one of our past. Uncle Juan and the Old Man character provide comic relief and also another perspective on "love potions". The play’s humor is in the recognition of how we handle the old problem of boy meets girl. We had a lot of fun exploring this world, hope you will too!
Play Synopsis
Rudy is a ninth-grader who has just made a first date, with an eleventh-grader – Patricia! Now he has to come up with the money, the poise, and the conversation to carry it off. Anyone who has been a teen or been in love will identify with their well-meaning family and friends who offer all kinds of advice in this heartwarming look at dating.
Who is Gary Soto?
Gary Soto is a Mexican-American author who grew up in Fresno, California. His works are primarily based on his own life, reflecting the adversities he has experienced because of his ethnicity, poverty, and circumstances of his youth. He has written poems, novels, and short stories, and was the youngest American poet to be included in the Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry.
He began writing between high school and college as a way to express himself. In college, he wrote poetry to start his career, making writing his way to success.

Tutorial
A photo of a recent Algebra I equation in an 8th grade tutorial group.
"A collaborative approach. The AVID classroom is not a traditional one in which a teacher lectures to passive students. An AVID teacher is a facilitator and an advocate. But students, not teachers or tutors, are responsible for their learning. Tutors function as discussion leaders, while students challenge, help, and learn from one another."

Test Preparation Tips
- Go to the bathroom before walking into the exam room, you don't want to waste anytime worrying about your bodily needs during the test.
- Eat before a test, having food in your stomach will give you energy and help you focus, but avoid heavy foods which can make you groggy.
- Go over any material from practice tests, HW's, sample problems, review material, the textbook, class notes...
- Go to review, pay attention to hints that the instructor may give about the test. Take careful notes and ask questions about items you may be confused about.
For more helpful hints go to the source I used: http://www.testtakingtips.com/
Reducing Test Taking Anxiety
- Being well prepared for the test is the best way to reduce test taking anxiety.
- Try to maintain a positive attitude while preparing for the test and during the test.
- Get a good night's sleep before the test.
- Show up to class early so you won't have to worry about being late.
- Stay relaxed, if you begin to get nervous take a few deep breaths slowly to relax yourself and then get back to work.
- Read the directions slowly and carefully.
- If you don't understand the directions on the test, ask the teacher to explain it to you.
- Don't worry about how fast other people finish their test; just concentrate on your own test.
- Focus on the question at hand; don't let your mind wander on other things.

College of Note
I found this college online. A college with a twist.
College of the Ozarks
Point Lookout, MO 65726
According to US News,
U of O Mission: College of the Ozarks is unique, because it charges no tuition. All full-time students work 15 hours a week to offset the costs of education. Students can also elect either to pay for room and board or to work in a summer program, which covers those costs. Debt is openly discouraged. C of O is a liberal arts college, founded a century ago by a Presbyterian minister. The College seeks students who are of good character, bright, willing to work and would have a difficult time paying to attend another college. The five aims of the College are to encourage academic, spiritual, patriotic, cultural and vocational growth in its students. (source: USNews.com)
According to Princeton Review
- Average High School GPA: 3.5
- Total Undergraduate Enrollment: 1,351
- Female: 55.81%
- Out of State: 33%
- International: 1.33%
- Freshman Enrollment: 282
Students don’t pay tuition at C of O! How does that work? Click Here.
